Bhutan charges a nightly Sustainable Development Fee that supports free healthcare, education and environmental conservation.
What the SDF is
The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a nightly charge levied on international tourists, used to fund Bhutan’s free healthcare and education systems, infrastructure and environmental conservation programs. It reflects Bhutan’s "high value, low volume" approach to tourism.
Current rates
For most international visitors, the SDF is USD 100 per person, per night. This reduced rate has applied since September 2023 and is confirmed by government notification through 31 August 2027.
Children aged 6–12 receive a reduced rate, and children under 5 are exempt. Indian, Bangladeshi and Maldivian nationals pay a separate, lower rate in local currency.

How it is paid
The SDF is paid through your licensed Bhutanese tour operator as part of the visa application process, not collected separately at the border.
