Bhutan Visa Guide
Almost all international visitors need a visa to enter Bhutan, arranged online in advance through a licensed tour operator.
Who needs a visa
Nearly all foreign nationals need a visa to visit Bhutan. Citizens of India, Bangladesh and the Maldives are the exception and do not require a visa, though they do need valid travel documents and are subject to the Sustainable Development Fee at a reduced regional rate.
How the process works
Bhutan does not issue tourist visas on arrival or through embassies abroad. Applications are submitted online through the Department of Immigration’s official portal, typically coordinated on your behalf by your tour operator once your itinerary is confirmed.
You will need a digital copy of your passport (valid at least six months beyond your departure date from Bhutan), a recent passport photo, and your travel dates.
Fees and timing
The visa application carries a one-time, non-refundable fee of USD 40 per person, separate from the Sustainable Development Fee. Processing generally takes about five working days once documents are submitted.
