Bhutan’s weather varies sharply with altitude — valleys can be mild while nearby passes are cold and windy.
A country of microclimates
Because Bhutan’s terrain rises from around 200 meters in the south to over 7,000 meters in the north, weather can vary enormously within a single day’s drive. Lower valleys like Punakha stay mild even in winter, while high passes and trekking routes are cold year-round.
What to expect by season
Spring and autumn bring the most stable, dry conditions. Summer (June–August) is the monsoon season, with regular afternoon rain in western and central valleys. Winter is dry but cold, especially after sunset.
