Bhutan’s currency is the Ngultrum, pegged to the Indian Rupee, with cards accepted mainly in larger towns.
Currency and exchange
Bhutan’s official currency is the Ngultrum (BTN), pegged 1:1 with the Indian Rupee, and Indian Rupees are widely accepted alongside it. US dollars and other major currencies can be exchanged at banks in Paro and Thimphu.
Cards and cash
Card acceptance is improving in hotels and larger shops in Thimphu and Paro, but cash remains essential in smaller towns and rural areas. Since most tour costs are prepaid, day-to-day cash needs are usually limited to souvenirs, drinks and tips.
