Wangdue Phodrang is Bhutan’s largest district, bordered by Gasa, Thimphu, Punakha, Trongsa, Dagana, and Tsirang. With over 70% forest cover and a population of about 45,000, it is home to two major hydropower plants (each exceeding 1,000 MW).
The majestic Wangdue Dzong, perched on a ridge between the Punatsang Chhu and Dang Chhu rivers, commands stunning views. Originally built in the 17th century by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, it has been beautifully restored after a devastating fire in 2012.
Wangdue offers numerous homestays and lodges and is easily accessible, on the way, between Thimphu and Punakha.
