Located in north-central Bhutan at 2,800 meters (9,185 feet), Bumthang is often called the spiritual heartland of the country. Comprising four valleys — Ura, Chumey, Tang, and Choekhor — it can be reached by a 30-minute flight from Paro or an 8-hour scenic drive through the Himalayas.
Bumthang’s lush landscapes and rich traditions have drawn comparisons to Switzerland. Key attractions include Kurje Lhakhang, Jambay Lhakhang, Tamzhing, Tharpaling, and Domkhar Dzong.
The area is also known for Bumthang Swiss cheese, Red Panda beer, and Yathra textiles made from yak and sheep wool. Visitors can explore the Sheep Breeding Center, charming Ura village, and time their visit to coincide with one of the valley’s colorful festivals.
