Once the capital of Bhutan until 1955, Punakha remains the winter residence of the monastic body. Situated at 1,200 meters above sea level, it enjoys warm winters and hot summers.
Two rivers — the male Pho Chhu and the female Mo Chhu — converge below the majestic Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most stunning architectural masterpieces. Built by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, Bhutan’s unifier, it has hosted historic events such as royal coronations and weddings. The Dzong houses sacred relics and the preserved remains of Bhutan’s founder.
The Punakha Valley, surrounded by terraced rice fields and traditional villages, offers an unforgettable glimpse into Bhutan’s spiritual and cultural heart.
